Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions patients ask most.

How long does a hip or knee replacement last?

Most last many years, but it depends on the joint, the implant and the patient. Registry figures for Mr Brock's implants are on the hip and knee pages. Revision is possible if an implant wears or loosens. See revision surgery.

What happens at the first appointment?

Mr Brock listens to your story, examines the joint, reviews your X-rays and explains your options, including non-surgical treatment. Bring your X-ray images or reports, a list of medicines and your insurer authorisation if you have one.

Do I have to have surgery?

No. Many people manage arthritis with exercise, weight management and pain relief. Surgery is for people whose pain and function remain poor despite this. See hip arthritis and knee arthritis.

Is robotic surgery better?

Robotic-arm assisted surgery places implants more accurately. In knee trials, patient-reported outcomes are similar overall, and longer-term results are not yet known. Read the details on the robotic surgery page.

Can I go home the same day?

Some suitable patients can have a day-case hip replacement. See day-case hip replacement for the criteria.

How much does it cost?

Self-pay consultations are £225 for a new appointment and £150 for a follow-up. Surgery is priced as a hospital package. See costs and funding.

Do I need a GP referral?

Many insurers want a referral letter before they authorise a first appointment. Self-pay patients can usually book directly. NHS patients need a GP referral. See how to enquire.

Can I have a video or telephone appointment?

Yes, these are available. [confirm which appointment types can be done remotely]

Where does Mr Brock work?

Privately at Tees Valley Hospital, Nuffield Health Newcastle, Woodlands Hospital, James Cook University Hospital and the Friarage Hospital. NHS patients are seen at James Cook and the Friarage. See clinics.
